Construction of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge began in February, 1967. The construction of the bridge cost $48 million and transformed 88,000 cubic yards of prestressed concrete and 7,000 tons of reinforced steel into the first bridge to span the San Diego Bay. The bridge opened to traffic of great fanfare on August 3, 1969, and coincided with the 200th anniversary of the City of San Diego. Governor Ronald Reagan led the caravan that made the first official drive across the 2.23-mile-long span. The bridge replaced five Coronado ferries which until 1969 provided the only transportation across the bay. It was the sad end of an era for Coronado and her residents.
