The Hotel Del Coronado is Coronados very own National Historic Landmark. Elisha Babcock and H.L. Story first opened the Hotel Del Coronado for business in 1888. Also known as the Del, this unique, Victorian style resort sits on Coronado beach covering 28 acres between the ocean and Glorietta Bay. The interesting Victorian architecture is said to have inspired L. Frank Baum in his writing of the Wizard of Oz. The Del has hosted many U.S. Presidents and famous dignitaries throughout the years, as well as celebrities who come to the Del for a peaceful pampering. The Del is famous for providing the backdrop for the classic movie Some Like It Hot filmed in 1959, starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis.

Only 15 minutes from the San Diego Airport, the Del is close to activities in San Diego, but allows visitors the slower pace of beautiful Coronado for rest and relaxation. |
