PRESS RELEASE from Coronado Museum of History and Art

Follow the yellow brick road to learn about the life of L. Frank Baum in Coronado and his writings. Through a temporary exhibit, “Ozily Yours: L. Frank Baum in Coronado,” visitors will learn about this renaissance gentleman, his creativity and his generosity. Ozily Yours opens on February 7 and will be on display until September 15, 2009.

We know Frank Baum as the beloved author of The Wizard of Oz series, books that changed children’s literature and the fairytale paradigm in the most magical and wondrous of ways.  In this exhibit the Coronado Museum of History and Art explores the means by which Baum succeeded in his goal to create a “modernized fairytale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heartaches and nightmares are left out,” his inspirations and influences along the way and the correlations to his time spent in Coronado. His poem, Coronado: The Queen of Fairyland illustrates his love of Coronado in the final stanza:

So wreathe fair Coronado’s brow
With laurels nobly won-
The nation’s pride, grim Ocean’s bride,
                        High Priestess of the Sun!

The exhibit includes early editions of the Oz series; poems; photographs of Baum, his family and views of Coronado from 1904-1912; and  memorabilia.

Join the Board of Directors and Staff of the Coronado Historical Association and Museum of History & Art for the Opening Reception of this newest exhibit
