Welcome USS Makin Island!
September 14th, 2009 Posted in Coronado News, Navy in CoronadoToday marked the arrival of a new ship in the U.S. Navy. USS Makin Island (DHL8) is named after a WWII by Marines on a Japanese-held Makin Island, the second ship to carry the name of this raid. It is always a beautiful sight to see a ship, with sailors in their dress whites lining the parameter of the deck, coming down the channel. It means that families will be reunited after being apart.

Built in Mississippi, the ship arrived into San Diego today and docked at North Island. The formal commissioning ceremony will occur on October 24th at North Island.
