On November 4, 1912 – The Army Arrives on North Island

On this day in history, the first Army aviation detachment arrived at North Island.  This marked the beginning of the Army’s aviation school and Rockwell Field.   A detachment of 8 enlisted men arrived first.  The commanding officer arrived a few weeks later, followed by another 10 officers and 10 more enlisted men.   The squadron aircraft consisted of two planes.  The Army stayed at North Island until October 1935, when they were ordered to relinquish Rockwell Field to the Navy, enlarging Naval Air Station San Diego (as it was known then) from 567 acres to 1320 acres.
