Endangered Birds Nesting Season in Coronado

February 26, 2008

The breeding seasons for the Snowy Plover and the California Least Tern typically last from March through September.   Both birds are protected under the federal Endangered Species Act.   Officials with Naval Base Coronado work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to monitor breeding areas.

The Navy is asking dog owners and beachgoers to be particularly careful not to disturb the birds in their habitat while they are nesting.  When walking on the beach, a good rule of thumb is to stay close to the water ‘s edge on the wet sand.  Leash laws will be enforced during nesting season.
