Fee-based preschool moves ahead in Coronado

Coronado’s superintendent has been given the green light to further explore the development of a fee-based preschool that would open in fall 2011.

The Coronado Unified School District’s board voted unanimously Thursday to continue researching the proposal for Crown Preschool.

If approved, the school would be marketed to parents as a “running start” for children who want to graduate from Coronado High School, where graduates often go directly to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard and Yale, said Superintendent Jeffrey Felix in his initial pitch.

Felix said the need for the program is evidenced by waiting lists at nearby private preschools and the two fully enrolled public preschools currently operating within the district.

Operational expenses for Crown, which would use space in existing facilities, are projected to be $15,000 a month.

“We have great facilities. I believe it is wasting an opportunity to not use them,” Felix said, “I love early intervention. The earlier you can take a child on, the better.”

A detailed proposal is scheduled to be presented to the board on Oct. 21.
