Have you visited Coronado Museum of History and Art to see the latest exhibit?  Coronado On The Frontline: 1942-1945 is a vivid display of the community’s response after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  Coronado residents faced challenges and sacrifices during the war, and watched friends and neighbors go off to war.  The exhibit will be on display until October 14, 2012.

Today in Coronado History: Writer L. Frank Baum is born in 1856.   L. Frank Baum is beloved in Coronado for his famous OZ books, inspired by the Hotel del Coronado and time he spent on Coronado.   Here’s a poem he wrote about Coronado.

Coronado: The Queen of Fairyland

Let Coronado wear her crown

As Empress of the Sea;

Nor need she fear her earthly peer

Will e’er discovered be.

We revel ‘neath her tropic palms

And scent her brilliant flowers,

And fondly greet the song-birds sweet

Shines pure, without a flaw;

New charms entrance our every glance

To South the mountains rear their crests

CORONADO, CA (May 14, 2012) – Coronado has received word that Starbucks has decided against selling beer and wine at its store at 960 Orange Avenue.

A Starbucks official and a California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control representative separately confirmed that the application was withdrawn, according to City Manager Blair King.

King said Starbucks withdrew the application on Friday, saying it now has no intention of applying for a beer and wine license.  According to an email to King, Starbucks Senior Manager, Government Affairs, Kim Winston, said “based on our due diligence process and our respect of the Coronado community, Starbucks took self-selected and proactive actions to pull its application.”

After Starbucks submitted its application for a Type 41 license on March 1, the City of Coronado sent several protest letters outlining its opposition to the license.

The City Council’s decision to send the opposition letter came after a discussion about overall policies about alcohol outlets. The Orange Avenue Corridor Specific Plan has provided policy guidance with regard to alcohol outlets. Prior to the council’s action, the City Council has commented or recommended conditions for an ABC license only twice in the past 25 years.
