This notification comes from the City of Coronado.
The election results from the November 4, 2008, election were certified on December 2, 2008. Newly elected Mayor Casey Tanaka was sworn in at the Council meeting held that day, along with re-elected Councilmember Carrie Downey and new Councilmember Michael Woiwode. The election of Mayor Tanaka leaves two years remaining in his unexpired term. Once election results are certified, the City Council is required by Municipal Code to call for a special election to fill the vacant council seat. Per California Government Code, the election must be scheduled at the next regularly established election, but no sooner than 114 days after the Council calls for the special election. The election date meeting these criteria is Tuesday, June 2, 2009. The term of the vacancy will be until November 2010. The City Council may, at its discretion, fill the vacant seat on an interim basis until the special election, if it chooses to do so. At the December 2, 2008, City Council meeting the newly reorganized City Council adopted a resolution calling and giving notice of the holding of a Special Municipal Election on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, for the election of a member of the City Council to fill a vacancy. At the same meeting, the Council unanimously agreed to not appoint an interim City Council member.
