North Island Thanksgiving – 1924

November 23, 2017

The military personnel on U.S. Naval Station San Diego (the original name for the naval base on North Island) were treated well on Thanksgiving.   Presumably, this postcard was sent by the men to assure their mothers that they were getting a hot meal on Thanksgiving!

The USS Shenandoah was pictured because she had been visiting the air station for the week before Thanksgiving.  Thousands of people came out to North Island during the week she was visiting.  The dirigible was 680 feet long, 96 feet high with a gas capacity of 2,150,000 cubic feet.  She had a top speed of 70 miles an hour with a cruising distance of 4000 miles, carrying up to 40 passengers.  Most of Coronado looked to the sky when she arrived and departed. What an incredible sight that must have been!
