On this Day in Coronado – April 16, 1886

Articles of Incorporation were filed by Babcock and Story for the San Diego and Coronado Ferry Company claiming sole right to run a ferry from between the two points. H.L. Story then went to San Francisco to order a ferry large enough to handle all the coming traffic. The first ferry built was called the Coronado and was in service by August of the same year. She cost $15,000 to build and was in service for 36 years, eventually sold to a motion picture company, remodeled to look like a Spanish galleon for the silent movie, Captain Blood, when she was blown up and sunk for the movie.
